The Donau City is a new part of Vienna’s 22nd District at the left bank of Danube’s 21.1 km long diluvian bed, Neue Donau.
It is a highrise quarter and has to deal with extrem wind exposure. Goal of the “instabilty highrise” is to make use of the wind energy and to create a new landmark for the Donau City and a head sign for the Reichsbrücke (bridge).
The instability highrise has a reactive, transformative textile facade that creates energy through wind force and is shaped by the flow of the wind on site. Along the South-East achse it channels and accelerates the wind through slots in the building mass. The North-West side is oriented towards the city center and has an iconic character.
The properties of the facade are energy production, sun screen, and wind defletor.
It is partly transparent, non-transparent, loose, tight, loud, quiet and unpredictable. Using displacements from fluctuating wind pressure on the outer shell hydraulic cylinder motion is produced to get translated into electric power generation.
